SSG South West Ltd – Health & Safety Policy
1. Statement of Intent
At SSG South West Ltd, the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, subcontractors, clients, and the public are of paramount importance.
We are committed to delivering our plumbing, heating, gas, and mechanical services to the highest professional standards while maintaining safe working environments in both domestic properties and construction sites.
Our objectives are to:
- Prevent accidents, injuries, and ill health.
- Provide safe systems of work through thorough Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
- Ensure all personnel receive appropriate training and supervision to carry out their duties safely.
- Supply and enforce the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Ensure strict compliance with site rules, industry standards, and legislation, including:
- The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
- The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998
- CDM Regulations 2015 (Construction Sites)
The Director accepts ultimate responsibility for health and safety within the company. However, every employee and subcontractor has a duty to protect themselves, their colleagues, and others affected by their actions.

2. Responsibilities
Management Responsibilities
- Provide sufficient resources to implement and maintain safe working practices.
- Prepare and communicate clear RAMS for all relevant activities.
- Ensure all staff and subcontractors receive appropriate training, induction, and refresher courses.
- Check that all operatives hold the correct competency cards, qualifications, and accreditations (Gas Safe, CSCS, etc.).
- Monitor sites regularly to ensure compliance with legislation, site rules, and company procedures.
- Maintain a safe working environment by supplying and monitoring the correct use of PPE, plant, and equipment.
Employee & Subcontractor Responsibilities
- Work in accordance with the company’s RAMS and site-specific rules at all times.
- Wear and correctly use PPE provided.
- Take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others.
- Report any unsafe conditions, near misses, or hazards immediately.
- Use tools, plant, and equipment only for their intended purpose, keeping them in a safe condition.
- Never carry out tasks for which they are not trained or authorised.
3. General Arrangements
Risk Assessments & Method Statements (RAMS)
- RAMS are carried out for all significant tasks, such as hot works, confined spaces, lifting operations, and working at height.
- These documents are briefed to operatives before works begin, and staff must confirm they understand them.
- RAMS are reviewed and updated as projects progress.
Training & Competence
- All engineers are trained and competent in their field. Gas work is carried out only by Gas Safe registered operatives.
- Toolbox talks and refresher training are delivered regularly.
- Operatives are expected to attend site inductions and comply fully with site-specific training.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Minimum PPE: hard hats, safety boots, hi-vis.
- Task-specific PPE: hearing protection, gloves, safety glasses, RPE, harnesses, etc.
- PPE must always be worn where identified in RAMS or site rules.
Tools, Plant & Equipment
- Regularly inspected and tested, including PAT testing of electrical tools.
- Damaged or defective items are immediately withdrawn from service.
- Correct lifting and handling techniques are enforced.
Site Safety Rules
- All operatives must comply with site inductions, traffic management systems, permit-to-work systems, and local site rules.
- Work areas must be kept clean and tidy, with waste stacked neatly and disposed of in designated skips.
- Housekeeping is to be maintained at all times, to avoid slips, trips, and falls.
Gas Safety
- All gas installation and servicing work is carried out to current Gas Safe regulations.
- Gas appliances are thoroughly tested, commissioned, and certified before handover.
- Landlord Gas Safety Certificates are issued where required.
Domestic Property Safety
- Care and respect shown to clients’ homes, with dust sheets and protection used in access routes.
- Clear communication with homeowners about the scope and duration of works.
- Work areas left safe at the end of each working day.
- Vulnerable persons, pets, and occupants considered in planning and carrying out works.
Emergency Procedures
- First aid kits carried in vehicles and available on sites.
- Emergency arrangements (fire, evacuation, first aid) communicated at induction.
- All incidents, accidents, and near misses are recorded and investigated.
4. Monitoring & Review
- Health & Safety performance is monitored on an ongoing basis.
- The policy will be reviewed annually, or earlier if changes in legislation, operations, or incidents require it.
- Lessons learned from audits, inspections, and incident investigations are used to improve safety performance.
